Angie Smithson, Chief Executive

Welcome from Angie Smithson, Chief Executive

Thank you for your interest in the Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (‘the Royal’) and this exciting opportunity to become our Deputy Chief Executive & Chief Operating Officer. I hope you find the information in this microsite interesting and informative and that you enjoy learning more about the role, our Trust, our vision, our achievements and our challenges.

I was delighted to be appointed as the Royal’s new Chief Executive and joined the team in September last year.  I have been continually impressed and proud of the commitment and the outcomes our dedicated workforce deliver, every day of the year.  As we experience the current unprecedented period of demand and challenge presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the resilience and courage I have seen demonstrated by all our staff has been completely inspirational.

Whilst currently in the midst of a significant period of operational demand requiring our urgent energy and planning, thinking beyond this crisis we are actively working with stakeholders to drive improvement for our patients and communities, pushing the boundaries of partnerships and joining up our efforts across the Derbyshire system.  Internally we continually seek to create a greater place for our people to work; where they are valued and appreciated for their contributions to our success.

We are the only acute District General Hospital in North Derbyshire, serving a population of more than 400,000 and we are the area’s largest employer - over 4000 staff working at the hospital, in the community and in our GP surgeries.  We have a £245 million budget, care for and treat around 360,000 patients every year – 80,000 of whom come to us through the doors of our 24 hour Emergency Department.  We are rated ‘GOOD’ by the Care Quality Commission.

The Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer is a key role and we are keen to attract an innovative and strategic leader.  We are looking for an individual who shares our values and will work collaboratively with our executive team, our staff and our partners as we continue our journey to making the Royal the best place to be cared for and to work for all our patients, staff and communities.

The Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer is a critical position for the Board with responsibility for operational management of all of our services as well as supporting me in working in partnership across the system.  We are seeking a strategic leader with significant Board level experience gained in complex acute NHS environments.  A committed team player with a track record of delivering change and performance improvement in complex services.  This is an excellent opportunity to develop your career in a broad ranging leadership role.

I hope you enjoy exploring this site and that you get a flavour of the role, our organisation, our culture and our ambitions.   I do encourage you to get in touch with our retained recruitment partners at GatenbySanderson; Emma Pickup or Joanna Riley on 0113 205 6296 for an informal conversation.

I look forward to meeting you during the process.
